What are smart electricity meters?
Smart electricity meters measure energy use and communicate over a network, so reading, billing and supply control happen remotely instead of by hand. Raivens builds smart electricity meters for single- and three-phase supplies, in prepaid and postpaid versions, plus multi-channel meters that sub-meter up to 10 circuits from one unit. The meters work with apps and a web portal. Raivens develops its smart-metering and wireless products under the WIRELAYS brand.
Why sub-metering matters
When one utility connection feeds many users, someone has to split the bill. Manual readings take time, invite disputes and leave dues unpaid. Smart sub-metering gives each shop, apartment, room or charging bay its own measured record. With prepaid credit, energy is paid for before it is used, and owners stop chasing payments.
Prepaid or postpaid
| Mode | How it works | Typical sites |
|---|---|---|
| Prepaid | Users add credit in the app or portal; use is deducted from the balance, and the relay can disconnect supply at zero credit | Hostels, rented rooms, apartments, EV charging bays |
| Postpaid | The meter records consumption, and the portal provides readings for periodic bills | Malls, offices, commercial buildings |
Key capabilities
- Multi-channel sub-metering. One meter measures up to 10 circuits. In a mall or office block, that means fewer devices in each panel and fewer communication links to manage.
- Remote recharge. Credit added from a phone reaches the meter over its network link, with no visit to a site office.
- Relay disconnect. The built-in relay disconnects supply on command or when prepaid credit runs out, and supply can be restored after a recharge.
- Tamper alerts. Tamper events are reported to the portal, so site teams can act before losses grow.
- Wireless choice. RF and LoRa suit sites with many meters close together. 4G suits standalone meters, such as a single shop or a remote charging bay.
- Apps and portal. Owners see consumption, balances and alerts in a web portal, while users check their usage and recharge from the app.
Built for malls, apartments, hostels and EV sites
Malls and commercial buildings bill each tenant on measured use instead of estimates. Offices and rented workspaces split one supply across tenants with postpaid sub-metering, so monthly bills come from real readings. Apartment complexes and hostels move to prepaid credit and stop collecting payments by hand. EV charging sites meter each bay to bill charging per resident or tenant, alongside Raivens AC EV chargers for long-stay parking and DC fast EV chargers for quick stops.
Integration and support
Raivens surveys the site, recommends meter types, channel counts and the wireless link, supports installation and sets up tariffs and billing rules with the owner. Metering rules differ between countries and utilities, so ask about variants for your local grid and metering standards. Compliance documentation per model is available on request.
