What are biometric devices?
Biometric devices capture a physical trait, such as a fingerprint, iris or face, and turn it into data that software can match against a stored record. In banking, they let an agent confirm a customer’s identity without a card, PIN or paper documents. The RAIVENS Biometric Device range starts with optical fingerprint scanners and adds iris and face options for the people and places where fingerprints are not enough.
Why biometric authentication matters for banks
Agent banking reaches customers who may not carry a card or remember a PIN. National ID-based biometric authentication solves that. The customer places a finger on the scanner, the bank’s authentication service checks it against the national ID record, and the transaction goes ahead. Banks, Business Correspondents (BCs) and agent-banking networks gain three things:
- Inclusion. Customers can bank with nothing but their identity.
- Fraud control. Each transaction is tied to a verified person, not a card that can be shared.
- Audit trail. Every authentication leaves a signed, time-stamped record.
Fingerprint, iris or face
| Modality | Strengths | Consider it for |
|---|---|---|
| Fingerprint (optical) | Fast, familiar, compact and USB-powered | Agent points, branches, attendance |
| Iris | Works when fingerprints are worn; contact-free | Manual workers, older customers, fallback checks |
| Face | Contact-free; uses a camera | Hygiene-sensitive sites, assisted verification |
Choosing a fingerprint scanner for agent banking
Before ordering for a whole network, check five points:
- Program fit. Confirm the secure capture method your national ID program or authentication service expects, and request the documentation for the model.
- Host devices. Desktop BC points need Windows support. Mobile agents need Android and OTG.
- Capture quality. Test with real users, including older customers and manual workers, whose fingerprints are harder to read.
- Daily load. A busy agent point captures many fingerprints a day, so test the scanner under realistic use.
- Support. Drivers, SDK updates and replacements should come from a team that answers for the hardware.
Key capabilities
The fingerprint scanners use an optical sensor at 500 ppi class resolution. They connect over USB to Windows PCs, or over OTG to Android phones, tablets and handheld POS machines. They draw power from the host, so a BC point needs no extra adapter or socket.
Security sits in the capture path. A registered-device style service encrypts and signs each capture before the banking application receives it, so the authentication server can trust that the data came from a known scanner. Windows and Android SDKs with sample code shorten integration for your developers.
Built for banking and attendance
At a BC point, the scanner works alongside a USB GPS receiver that geo-tags each transaction and a payment soundbox that announces results aloud. Banks that want the full setup can order a complete kit through hardware and software technologies for banks and BCs. Beyond banking, the same scanners record staff attendance and secure staff sign-in to branch systems.
Integration and support
Raivens designs, builds and supports its devices in-house, from electronics and firmware to SDKs. Compliance documentation per model is available on request, along with datasheets for your IT and risk teams. To choose a model or plan a rollout, contact our team.
